WELCOME TO PULAU UBIN EXPLORER

Introduction

A small island, shaped like a boomerang, this island is off the northeastern coast of Singapore main island. This could be the very last kampung or village in Singapore.
Taking a stroll in Pulau Ubin would bring you back into the lifestyle Singapore had in the 1960s. You can enjoy the natural vegetation, interesting wildlife and most importantly what we could not get in this busy city, is the laidback kampong atmosphere.
This is a place full of legends, with an enthralling history and geography. The settlement of Ubin was founded by a man name Encik Endut Senin as he sought the permission of the Sultan. Then, more than 50 families from Singapore joined him as it was a good strategic place for farming and fishing on the island. Soon, other industries such as granite quarrying took off. Once a busy village, Ubin accommodated a school, temples and shrines and the famous historical site in the island, near of Chek Jawa, is the 'House No. 1'.
Built in the 1930s this English or Tudor style, House No. 1 or the English Bungalow/Cottage is a unique pre war structure. This building has a verandah and even a fireplace!! It was said that this house was a holiday retreat of a British medical officer. Other resources said that it was a home for the Chief Surveyor, Langdon Williams also for retreat. It is then later taken over by a rubber company and its manager.
This island is the first point of landing of the Japanese during the World War II on 7 Feb 1942.
Now it is more developed into a nature park with the basic amenities and trails, campsites, chalets and shelters. For the physically active, this island has facilitated their visitors for trekking and cycling.

Bicycle Rental

The best way to get around Ubin island is cycling. Rent a bike in the entrance of the island. The rental is S$3-5 for the whole day. S$3 is for long used bicycle and S$5 is for brand new bicycle. It is advised to take a brand new bicycle to avoid any broken down ( although there is possibility for brand new bike to break down as well but the probability will be lower) If you arrived the island in the afternoon for example 2 or 3 o'clock, you may get cheaper prices.

The business is very competitive, so better ask before rent. Remember to keep the receipt and check the bicycle condition before you go. If anything wrong along the way i.e. bicycle break down, give the shop a call and they will come to assist u.

Fishing at Ubin

I Muhammad Haziq have tried fishing at Pulau Ubin a couple of times before. You can enjoy the scenery while fishing at any fishing spot you can find. If you are lucky, you might even spot some wild animals like monkeys and squirrels there. There are a lot of different varieties of fishes there and if you catch them you can bring it back to cook. It will be a fresh meal for you. You can get your fishing items at Changi Village fishing shops which sell fishing items at an affordable price. You can go and try it out!

History Of Pulau Ubin

The Malay village of Kampung Surau was founded by Encik Endut Senin who originally came from Kampung Kallang near the Kallang River. He sought the permission of the Sultan (then at Kampung Glam Palace) to live on the island, which at that time, had no name. 50 other Malay families later joined him to form a thriving Malay community at Kampung Melayu, Kampung Sungei Durian and Kampung Surau.

Attracted by the good fishing and farming on the island, the Chinese also came to Ubin and settled at Ubin Town and Kampung Jelutong. 25 families were the first to settle, followed by others as industries such as granite quarrying took off.

Ubin was once a bustling settlement, with a school and other amenities. Among its interesting historical sites is House No. 1 near Chek Jawa. There are also temples and shrines rich in history. Ubin Town itself is full of history.
